Each group represents eight CSX tags (5' to 3' horizontal orientation, each of the eight CpG sites is represented by a circle) sampled from a single crypt, with nine crypts per patient. Open circles are unmethylated sites and filled circles are methylated sites. Numbers of unique tags per crypt and crypt percent methylation are summarized below each crypt. The seemingly random methylation patterns collectively encode both numbers of divisions since birth and ancestry.
