Similarity between community medicine distributors and their friends. Dashed lines show the mean value. All plots include all CMDs (59 obs.). Histogram bar widths = 0.25. a–k Show CMD homophily scores for all socioeconomic characteristics. Homophily is the measure of likeness for a group of individuals; homophily scores for CMDs reveal to what extent the friend group of a CMD is similar to the CMD of interest when compared by socioeconomic characteristics (Additional file 1: supplementary methods). A score of − 1 indicates perfect similarity, i.e. friends have the same characteristic/value as the CMD for the variable of interest, whilst + 1 indicates perfect dissimilarity, i.e. no friends have the same characteristic/value as the CMD for the variable of interest
