Gout diagnosis, management and therapy

A new cross-journal article collection in BMC Medicine and BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders

Guest edited by Prof Jasvinder Singh

Gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis in adults, and is at least 1-3 times as common as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Similar to RA, it can and often is associated with chronic polyarthritis that if not treated early and aggressively, leads to joint destruction. Essential to gout is the occurrence of hyperuricemia and urate crystal associated inflammation in joints and other body tissues. The complex association of gout with cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, renal failure and other rheumatic conditions (RA, osteoarthritis), makes it one of the most exciting rheumatic diseases.

Gout as a topic is also ready for a special article collection due to the recent pharmacological breakthroughs with the launch of new drug therapies and the advances in imaging for gout. Many questions remain unanswered for gout, including the comorbidity associations, the role of various treatment options and the role of genetics vs. environment in the causation and progression of this condition.

We are seeking submissions of original research articles that provide important developments in gout management and therapy. This collection, which will be published in BMC Medicine and BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, will also include invited reviews and commentaries.

If you have any research you would like us to consider for inclusion in our gout cross-journal collection, please submit directly to either BMC Medicine or BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders. Alternatively you can email your presubmission queries to bmcmedicineeditorial@biomedcentral.com
